YOU’RE PROBABLY WONDERING JUST WHAT THE HELL A “GEON” IS. IT SOUNDS LIKE A CRAPPY COMPACT CAR, OR MAYBE A CHARACTER FROM TRON, but a geon is actually a building block of sight, and essential to the way we process visual information – including, of course, monsters. To be more specific, geons are very basic shapes, such as squares, circles, cones, rectangles, pyramids (in 2-D or 3-D) – that our brains keep on file and can use to immediately recognize more complex shapes comprised of multiple geons. This is why, for example, we recognize two ovals side-by-side, with an upwardly curved line beneath them, inside of a circle, as a happy face.
