I’ve been asked more than once (twice, to be exact) why a column called Bowen’s Basement has never covered a movie called Cellar Dweller (1987). I mean, hello, no-brainer, right? But the truth is, I’d been avoiding it. I’d heard “cheap,” “cheesy,” “dumb,” and “shitty” used to describe it, and not in the good way. Because as any halfway discerning horror fan knows, there are right and wrong ways to be any or all of those things, and any time Cellar Dweller came up, said descriptors were not used in the spirit of endearment.
But whaddya know? When I finally got around to giving it a spin all these years later, I was pleasantly surprised, if not exactly blown away. Cellar Dweller is unlikely to make anyone forget Hellraiser, Near…
