BACK IN 2004, DENG ZHANG LAUNCHED A SMALL CHINESE DISTRIBUTION COMPANY WITHOUT ANY LOFTY ASPIRATIONS OF FAME AND FORTUNE, just the desire to help his musician friends make their mark. Before long, Pest Productions came to oversee a roster of over two dozen artists from all possible subgenres of black metal – primitive, experimental, folk, ambient, and atmospheric – from all over the world, including Ghâsh (Chile), Vulpus (Portugal), as well as China’s Zuriaake.
“In 2006, [Pest Productions] was officially transformed into a label in order to release my friends’ demo, the depressive black metal band Be Persecuted,” says Zhang. “At that time, 99% of overseas fans didn’t know Chinese extreme metal existed, but now everything’s changed, clearly.”
